TMJ massage (temporomandibular joint)
Available most days with Jules or Amira
Service Description
Release jaw tension. Soften facial tension. Breathe more freely. TMJ massage is a gentle, targeted treatment designed to ease tension held around the jaw, face, temples, neck and shoulders. The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) are the small joints that connect your jawbone to your skull and allow you to open and close your mouth, chew and speak. Stress, teeth clenching, grinding and everyday tension can cause the muscles around the jaw to become tight and uncomfortable. Our TMJ massage focuses on releasing muscular tension around the jaw and face, while also working with the neck, shoulders and upper back to encourage a deeper sense of relaxation. What can TMJ massage help with? Jaw tension can often be accompanied by tension in other areas of the head, neck and shoulders. A TMJ massage may help you feel more relaxed and comfortable if you experience: Tight or tired jaw muscles Jaw tension associated with stress or clenching Tension around the temples and forehead Facial muscle tension Tightness through the neck and shoulders Head and neck tension A feeling of heaviness or fatigue around the face General stress and muscular tension What happens during a TMJ massage? Your treatment begins with a consultation so we can understand where you are holding tension and tailor the treatment to you. The massage combines gentle external techniques around the jaw, face, temples and scalp with focused work through the neck, shoulders and upper back. Your therapist will also work gently on the muscles inside the mouth. This is always discussed with you beforehand, and you remain in control of the treatment throughout. The aim is not to force or manipulate the jaw, but to encourage tight muscles to soften and relax. A deeply relaxing treatment Because jaw tension is often linked with stress and unconscious clenching, TMJ massage can be a wonderfully calming treatment as well as focused bodywork. Taking time to slow down, relax the facial muscles and release tension through the jaw, neck and shoulders can leave you feeling lighter, calmer and more at ease. Is TMJ massage right for me? TMJ massage can be particularly beneficial if you notice that you clench your jaw when you're stressed, concentrate or sleep, or if you regularly carry tension in your face, jaw, neck or shoulders.
